Nitric oxide reductase (norC) from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1
This gene codes for one of the nitric oxide reductase subunits (norC) that, in connection with the other subunit (norB), converts nitric oxide (NO) into nitrous oxide (N2O). This conversion is the second step in the denitrification pathway from nitrite (NO2-) to nitrogen gas (N2); the other genes that create this pathway can also be found in the iGEM registry (nirS (BBa_K1356003), norB (BBa_K1356005), and nosZ (BBa_K1356006)). A complete description of the original purpose of using this gene in reducing nitrate concentrations in the effluent of wastewater treatment facilities can be found on the BYU Provo 2014 Project Description page.
