SV40 promotor is a viral promotor derived from Simian virus 40.

Because we could not found the SV40 promotor in the parts registry, we decided to provide one to the following iGEM teams. This enables the teams to choose from differently strong mammalian promotors – dependent of the individual intention. We tested both promotors (BBa_K1150011 [SV40], BBa_K747096 [CMV]) with our own devices for expression rate and effectivity. For further information please take a look at BBa_K1150019 and BBa_K1150020.

In an earlier study CMV and SV40 promoter were tested in different B and T cell as well as in two non-lymphoid cell. In all cell lines the CMV promoter construct was higher expressed than that of SV40 [Zarrin et al., 1999].

In comparison to the cellular promoter VV1 SV40 showed similar activities. Hence with an SV40 promotor one can gain a more physiologic control for reporter assays compared to CMV.
