Part:BBa_M31234
Calcium channel-apoaequorin fusion
This part encodes for the homo sapiens neuronal voltage-gated calcium ion channel gamma-3 subunit linked to Aequorea victoria apoaequorin. The ion channel is expressed in the membrane of the presynaptic cleft, with an apoaequorin linked to the C-terminal of the channel. If coelenterazine is present within the neuron, it binds to the apoaequorin along with oxygen. When an action potential reaches the modified ion channel, calcium ions flood in to the cell, and 2 or 3 of them bind to the apoaequorin. When the calcium ions bind, the coelenterazine is oxidized, and light in the form of bioluminescence is emitted as a byproduct. This part, when used in tandem with coelenterazine will show the activity of neurons by bioluminescing whenever an action potential reaches the synapse.
