comE3 Competence locus E from H. pylori
This coding region is responsible for the generation of a DNA binding competence protein suspected to be partly responsible for the natural competence and genetic diversity observed in Helicobacter Pylori strains. Knockout studies of this gene (HP ORF 1361) have demonstrated greatly diminished cell transformation capability when a mutated form of the comE3 gene is present (Yu-Ching Yeh et al., 2003). This gene could be useful in preparing organisms to be naturally competent for greater ease of genetic transformation studies/antibiotic resistance studies, particularly involving H. pylori. It is important to note, however, that this gene has been found to be lethal to E. coli when it is expressed (Yu-Ching Yeh et al., 2003).
