This basic part codes for the calcium cation binding beta roll motif found in the alkaline protease of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Calcium cations are bound to two half-sites, exhibited by the GGXGXD motifs, which are brought together in pairs of loops in the beta roll. The role of this motif is not completely elucidated, but it is suspected that it affects folding after transmembrane translocation. Since the beta roll binds calcium internally, the absence of Ca2+ ions may cause instability in the fold structure, thus facilitating membrane translocation in an unfolded conformation.
