Safranal and Crocin Producing Construct (Cs42s)

This is a synthesized construct which was designed to produce safranal and crocin glycosides form zeaxanthin producing cells-the chemicals. It has been designed to function in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, but has not been characterized in this species.

The part is a composite of a variety of smaller pieces. The ends of the part are the biobrick suffix and prefix, added in order to allow the part to be submitted in the biobrick plasmid. The three main genes, ZCD, UGTCS2, and CrtZ convert zeaxanthin into the end products of safranal and crocin, the main components of saffron. In addition, RBS, restriction and spacer sites were inserted in between the genes, to allow us to amplify out different parts of the main brick in order to test the individual genes and optimize their expression.
