The XPC gene (Xeroderma Pigmentosum, Complementation Group C) encodes a key DNA repair protein in the human genome. The primary function of this gene is related to the Nucleotide Excision Repair (NER) pathway, which is one of the most important pathways for repairing ultraviolet (UV) radiation and other exogenous or endogenous damage that damages the structure of DNA. XPC proteins are responsible for recognizing sites of DNA damage in this process, particularly those DNA double helix aberrations caused by UV radiation or chemicals.After binding to damaged DNA, XPC proteins recruit other repair proteins, including the TFIIH complex, which subsequently unwinds the DNA to enable repair enzymes to excise the damaged DNA fragments. Repair then synthesizes the DNA fragment and rejoins it by DNA ligase.
