This part is a gene combination consisting of ycnE and FMO, which can degrade indole, a heterocyclic aromatic compound, to different colored pigments. ycnE is a monooxygenase from Escherichia coli, which can oxidize indole to indigo, a blue dye. FMO is a flavin-containing monooxygenase from Pseudomonas putida, which can hydroxylate indole to indirubin, a purple-red dye. The part also contains a strong bacterial ribosome binding site (RBS) (BBa_B0034) before each gene to ensure efficient translation. A double terminator (BBa_B0015) is added at the end of the part to prevent read-through transcription and ensure the stability of the mRNA.
