promoter J23119+alkS+promoter PalkB+alkB1

This part is an alkane biosensor and biodegrader. Constitutive promoter J23119 induces expression of AlkS, which is an alkane-responsive transcriptional activator. In the presence of alkanes, AlkS binds promoter PalkB. As a result, it induces its expression of downstream alkB1 gene, which catalyzes hydroxylation of n-alkanes. Hence, this part is able to detect the presence of alkanes and degrade them by inducing expression of alkane-degrading monooxygenase enzymes.
