Engineered L-1,2-propanediol oxidoreductase (fucO)

Propanediol oxidoreductase (UniProt: P0A9S1) encoded by the fucO gene, is a native enzyme to E. coli that has also been shown to exhibit promiscuous activity toward ethylene glycol [1]. This part contains a variant with two swapped residues I6L/L7V as they have been found to increase activity [2].

When overexpressed together with a glycolaldehyde dehydrogenase (BBa_K4701211), E. coli can be engineered to utilize ethylene glycol as its carbon source [2], [3].
