FUCO2

FUCO2 is one of the isoenzymes of Alpha-L-fucosidases. Alpha-L-fucosidase is responsible for hydrolyzing the alpha-1,6-linked fucose joined to the reducing-end N-acetylglucosamine of the carbohydrate moieties of glycoproteins and thus cleaving the nonreducing terminal-L-fucose from these glycoconjugates. L-fucose, a monosaccharide commonly found in various organisms serves as an important nutrient for the microorganism. It has been implicated in bacteria colonisation by acting as nutrient source for commensal or pathogenic bacteria . However, Qipengyuania aquimaris does not encode any obvious fucosidase homologs suggesting that Qipengyuania aquimaris may forage on L-fucose released by others. Alpha-L-fucosidases of Phaeodactylum tricornutum are predicted to be extracellular (membrane-attached or periplasm) or intracellular. Therefore, overexpression of alpha-L-fucosidases in Phaeodactylum tricornutum allows alpha-L-fucosidases to be released into the environment, where it can be utilizated by Qipengyuania aquimaris.
