Salp12 expression block
Salp12 is a protein found in the salivary glands and midgut of the Ixodes scapularis tick, the main host of the Borrelia burgdorferi spirochete and causative agent of Lyme Disease. The protein has been found to function as a chemoattractant for B. burgdorferi, playing a role in the acquisition of the spirochete into new tick hosts from infected prey. Salp12 can be used in projects as a initiate B. burgdorferi chemotaxis. This is a new addition to the iGEM Parts Registry with the hope of spurring on additional synthetic biology research to combat Lyme disease caused by B. burgdorferi.
This expression block includes Salp12 and its respective T7 promoter, lac operon, and RBS.
The Salp12 protein comes from the salivary glands and midgut of the Ixodes scapularis tick.
The amino acid sequence of Salp12 was found in the supplemental data for the 2019 paper published by Murfin et al. and reverse translated, codon optimized for E. coli.
