HuRV 2A Peptide Optimized for Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii
HuRV is a 2A peptide originating from Human Rotavirus. 2A peptides are short peptides, typically ranging from 18-22 amino acids in length, which facilitate the expression of more than one protein in a single vector.
In viruses, 2A peptides enable the expression of multiple proteins from a single transcript. During translation, ribosomes which encounter 2A peptides will undergo a "ribosomal skipping event," in which a peptide bond fails to be made. This causes a "cleavage" event to take place between the two polyproteins between the 2A peptide sequence, creating two independent polyproteins.
The sequences for 2A peptides found in viruses, like HuRV, can be used in synthetic biology to allow the efficient coexpression of genes in novel biological entities, as they do in their native context. In addition, the small size and abundance of 2A peptide sequences available add to their utility in gene editing.
