Part:BBa_K4382003
Beta-xylosidase (XynB)
It is used to degrade Xylanase
Usage and Biology
This gene, alongside Xylanase A (XynA) was discovered through screening of mutant lines of Bacillus subtilis. In this experiment, mutant lines of Bacillus subtilis 168 were created and were grown on plates with Xylan as the only carbon source.
Two types of Xylanase mutants were obtained - one which can’t grow in pure xylan and the other which grows very slowly. The gene in question is involved in the latter mutation. Xylanase B breaks down xylo-oligosaccharides produced from the breakdown of Xylanase A to form the monomeric units of xylan, i.e. xylose. In our project, xylose formation by breakdown of xylo-oligosaccharides shall be catalyzed by XynB. The optimal working temperature for xylanase B is 42 degrees celsius at a pH of 6.5.
