alg8 is the catalytic subunit of the alginate polymerase complex.

Alg8 codes for the glycosyltransferase in the alginate operon and is located in the inner membrane of the bacteria. It polymerises alginate precursors such as GDP-mannuronic acid and guluronic acid. It is considered as a catalytic subunit, which performs the rate limiting reaction in the process of alginate synthesis. The overexpression of alg8 could lead to a higher alginate yield in size and quantity.
