bFGF: Basic fibroblast growth factor

Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF or FGF2) was initially identified as a mitogen that promotes angiogenesis, and was later found to be a multifunctional growth factor. bFGF produces biological effects in target cells through FGF receptor signal transduction on the cell surface. bFGF binds to four FGF receptors. Ligand binding induces receptor dimerization and autophosphorylation, binding and activation of cytosolic downstream target proteins, including FRS-2, PLC and Crk. FGF signal transduction pathway plays an important role in normal cell growth regulation. We used bFGF to promote the growth of epidermal cells and fibroblasts. The bFGF we selected has a molecular weight of 33.8 kDa. In our application, we fused the IL-2 Signal sequence (BBa_K4211002) at the N-terminal of the bFGF gene to promote the secretion of bFGF out of the cell.

Usage and Biology

We used bFGF and EGF (BBa_K4211000) to stimulate the growth of epidermal cells and fibroblasts, promoting the wound healing.
