UPC2 transcriptional regulator
UPC2 is a transcriptional regulator that is regulated by ergosterol binding. UPC2 will bind to Sterol Regulatory Elements (SREs) reversibly, where ergosterol binding discourages SRE binding.
UPC2, along with a promoter containing an SRE, can form a biosensor for fungi. Ergosterol is a molecule unique to fungal membranes and ergosterol concentration can be an indicator of fungal population. The 2021 Hopkins iGEM team used UPC2 for this purpose to regulate the production of antifungal genes in response to A. sydowii infection of corals.
