Human basic fibroblast growth factor, bFGF

Recombinant human fibroblast growth factor, bFGF - also abbreviated FGF-2 and FGF-ß, is a member of fibroblast growth factor family[1] and can be produced in E. coli as a single, non-glycosylated protein[2]. In humans, different reports shows a predominant localization both in the nucleus and the cytosol, with unknown reason for inconsistency[3].

In skin, melanocyte and keratinocyte cells form the so-called epidermo-melanic unit. This is partly mediated by cytokines derived from the keratinocytes, which are important for the well-being of melanocytes. One of the cytokines secreted by keratinocytes is bFGF, acting as a mitogen for melanocytes and also promotes melanin synthesis[4].
