Tumor suppressor and biomarker for early detection of breast cancer.
Micro RNAs, or miRNAs, are non-coding regulators of gene expression that act after transcription. Many miRNA have been identified that act in a primarily oncogenic or tumor suppressive manner, which is ideal for highly specific indicators to diagnose cancers at early stages. MiRNA424-5p is a tumor suppressor that is elevated during the early stages of breast cancer and is present in biofluids like urine, which makes it a great target for non-invasive early detection of breast cancer. Early detection of cancer improves prognosis, and miRNA424-5p can also be used to predict how the patient will react to chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
