Gene AP24 encoding the antimicrobial protein osmotin.
The gene AP24 encoding an antifungal protein, osmotin. It induces cell lysis through pore formation and dissipation of membrane potential. Potato and tomato plants expression a AP24 gene have been shown to have a increased resistance the pathogens Phytophthora infestans and Fusarium oxysporum [1].
The gene originates from Nicotiana tabacum, and the osmotin protein is completely safe for human consumption. The protein length is 246 aa and correctly folded it contains 8 disulfide bonds, which may be problematic in bacterial expression.
For more information of the protein, see Uniprot record P141170 [2].
