HbcAg for the Detection of Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that affects the liver caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). The virus is transmitted through sharing of infected blood and bodily fluids and can not be transmitted through physical contact. The symptoms of the infection are not obvious at the onset of the disease until later, by which it could be fatal. Some of these symptoms include abdominal pain, dark urine, jaundice, fever and fatigue. Hepatitis B may also lead to further health complications as liver cancer, Cirrhosis or scarring of the liver, Liver failure, Kidney disease, and Blood vessel problems. People between the ages of 20 and 49 are most likely to get it. As many as 1.4 million people in the United States are carriers of the virus, however from the 90s to the late 2000s, there has been a significant decline in the average number of people infected with the HBV virus.

Description of HBcAg: is a hepatitis B viral protein. It is an indicator of active viral replication; this means the person infected with Hepatitis B can likely transmit the virus on to another person. HBcAg is an antigen that can be found on the surface of the nucleocapsid core (the innermost layer of the hepatitis B virus).
