IRES

Some genes have a short RNA sequence (about 150-250 bp) at the 5' end, which folds into a structure similar to the starting tRNA, mediates ribosomal RNA binding, and initiates protein translation. This untranslated RNA is called the Internal ribosome entry site (IRES).
