D-amino acid oxidase (DAAO)

Group: Freiburg
Author: Alisa
Summary: The D-amino acid oxidase is a FAD-containing enzyme that oxidizes D-amino acids to the corresponding imino acids, producing ammonia and hydrogen peroxide [1]. Its functions vary from detoxification in mammals to generation of energy in microorganisms. </b>

Usage

In the food industry the oxidase is used for the quantification of D-amino acids in food to determine its quality. It can also be used to detect D-amino acids which were experimentally generated by an aspartate racemase.

Biology

DAAO was firstly discovered in porcine kidneys. It was the second flavoenzyme to be discovered. It has a number of physiological effects in various systems, most notably the brain. In this context we wanted to establish the DAAO as a biosensor for D-aa we generated with our racemase.
