Cin inducible Synthase

Quorum sensing is a bacterial communication system that can be very useful for bacterial communication in synthetic biology. In this system, AHL (N-Acyl homoserine lactone) signaling molecules generated in a bacteria binds to a receiver in other bacteria to activate downstream gene expression. The AHL molecules are generated by a synthase and received by other bacteria through a reporter.

Among all the QS pathways, the Cin pathway is based on the production of the 3OC14:1 homoserine lactone (HSL) produced by the Cinl protein. If coupled to a gene with a promoter responsive to quorum sensing signals, this construct can create a response dependant on cell density and L-arabinose concentration. This part contains the Cinl transcribed by a promoter inducible by L-arabinose, permitting for controlled expression of the HSL signal.
