TonB dependent Siderophore Receptor fyuA: Yersiniabactin receptor
FyuA encodes for the TonB dependent outer membrane receptor for the bacterial siderophore yersiniabactin. It mediates the uptake of yersiniabactin-iron-complex from the surrounding media.
Studies found that fyuA must be an important factor in biofilm formation and therefore an important survival factor for bacteria in iron-deprived environments. FyuA Knockouts show extremely low biofilm formation capacities, which makes fyuA an interesting target for antimicrobial approaches.
On the other hand fyuA could be utilized to create strains of enterobacteriae on which siderophore therapies could be tested.
