surfactin synthase-activating enzyme Sfp transfers the 4'-phosphopantetheine moiety of coenzyme A onto a serine residue, which is conserved in all peptidyl carrier proteins (PCPs) of nonribosomal peptide synthetases. This posttranslational modification converts PCPs from their inactive apo into the active holo form. The reaction is dependent on Mg2+ and yields 3′,5′-ADP as a second product.
