Very potent, broad-spectrum beta-lactamase

SHV-1 is an enzyme of the β-lactamase family typically found in Klebsiella pneumoniae. This enzyme mediates resistance against a wide spectrum of ꞵ-lactams and is responsible for up to 20% of the plasmid-mediated ampicillin resistance in this species. SHV-1 belongs to a group of so called extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) which are known for inhibiting antibiotics by hydrolysis. Most problematic is the fact, that ESBLs are encoded by genes that can be exchanged between bacteria.
