Survivin is a member of apoptotic inhibitory protein family. Survivin has tumor specificity and is only expressed in tumor and embryonic tissues. It is closely related to the proliferation and infiltration of tumor cells. There are two pathways of apoptosis: exogenous apoptosis and endogenous apoptosis: the exogenous apoptosis pathway, also known as the death receptor pathway, is triggered by the death ligands of the extracellular tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily; the endogenous apoptotic pathway is also known as mitochondrial cytochrome C/mediated pathway. Survivin may inhibit cell apoptosis mainly through these two pathways. It inhibits the activity of Caspase family proteins involved in the two apoptosis pathways to block all kinds of stimulation inducing apoptosis. Survivin also interacts with cyclic protein kinase CDK4 or CDK2 to block apoptotic signal transduction pathway.
