Hfq is a protein present in many bacteria. Its function is to bind dsRNA complexes to stabilize the interaction between the RNA; this mainly functions in sRNA mediated gene silencing, in which a prolonged interaction provides more time for RNase III to recognize and degrade the duplex. Furthermore, there is a lack of consensus on whether or not Hfq is functional and/or important in Staphylococcus species, making its characterization and study particularly interesting. This part provides users with the gene for Hfq with a 6x His tag to allow for purification.
