crtE (geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase)
Geranylgeranylpyrophosphate (GGPP) requires the condensation of farnesylpyrophosphate (FPP) and isoprenylpyrophosphate (IPP) by geranylgeranylpyrophosphate synthase (crtE). Although this sequence of crtE is from Pantoea ananatis (one of the crt genes in the biosynthesis of carotenoids in this organism), Geranylgeranylpyrophosphate (GGPP) is also an intermediate in multiple terpenes and terpenoids biosynthesis pathways. In the Synechocystis genome, there is one gene, crtE (slr0739), annotated as geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase, which is likely to encode the enzyme that performs these steps, and this gene has been used in the pathway for squalene synthesis. In plants it is also the precursor to carotenoids, gibberellins, tocopherols, and chlorophylls.
