Initiator protein repA
This gene encodes an initiator protein, repA. This BioBrick is used in vectors for Bacillus subtilis to make sure that the vector can be replicated and thereby be inherited in the next generation of B. subtilis cells.
Usage and Biology
Originally, the repA protein was purified and characterized from the vector pLS1. Here, it was found that it is an important protein in the regulation of the plasmid copy number in a cell. Biologically, this enzyme is a DNA helicases that consists of six homomers put together to one complex. When expressed this enzyme can replicate vectors that is found in the cell, hereby making sure that the cell will not loose the vector during cell division.
