Hfq from Serratia marcescens DB10/DB11

An RNA binding protein from the Hfq family. Hfq-like proteins are conserved from microbes to man. This one is similar to the structurally-characterised E. coli version, but in Serratia it encounters a host of different sRNA sequence targets.


Usage and Biology

Serratia is a gamma-Proteobacterium similar to E. coli but with an array of different anti-bacterial and anti-fungal stategies that are carefully regulated. Hfq is a key regulator in Serratia and it works in one of several ways. It can stabilise mRNA transcripts by typically binding to hairpin loops and protecting from degradation. It can also stablise sRNAs with a complementary sequence to another mRNA and help with a type of 'RNA silencing'. This latter property has the potential to be harnessed for synthetic biology applications.
