Cellulose Binding Domain

Usage and Biology

This domain is part Cellulosome Integrating Protein A (CipA), which forms part of the Clostridium Thermocellum cellulosome. The cellulosome is an extracellular protein scaffold attached to the cell wall of the bacteria and that displays cellulose-degrading enzymes (cellulases). For increased cellulose degradation, the cellulosome of C. Thermocellum includes a Cellulose Binding Domain (CBD) that brings enzymes and substrate together.

Improvement

This year, Team NWPU reduced 27bp of this part(12bp at 5’ end and 15bp at 3’ end) and then created our new part CBM3b(BBa_K2155005). According to a paper published by Stéphanie Perret in 2013, Both modules(CBM3a and CBM3b) bind to phosphoric acid swollen cellulose (PASC) with the same affinity. So following team could use a smaller module(CBM3b) to achieve the same function in their project.
