Epsilon Cyclase
A. thaliana LCYE (lycopene epsilon cyclase) with chloroplast transit peptide removed. Catalyzes the formation of one epsilon ring on lycopene. Does not act on delta-carotene or gamma-carotene.
Epsilon cyclase functions as an intermediate step in the conversion of lycopene to lutein, supplements of which delay the onset and lessen the symptoms of Age-Related Macular Degeneration. In concert with crtE, crtI, and crtB, which redirect the mevalonate pathway to produce lycopene, epsilon and beta cyclases and hydroxylases catalyze a series of four reactions to produce the two hydroxylated rings that differentiate lutein from lycopene.
