LuxI LVA
LuxI is an AHL synthetase. The LVA tag leads to faster degradation of the protein. The specific AHL produced by this gene product is 3OC6HSL. It is used in quorum sensing systems: one organism expresses LuxI, whose AHL's diffuse freely into the surrounding environment. When an AHL enters a strain expressing LuxR, they bind, and LuxR-AHL activates pLux (there is also a LuxR-repressed version of pLux). The expression of a gene can thus be tied to the surrounding concentration of other (LuxI-expressing) organisms.
