LuxI
LuxI is an AHL synthetase. The specific AHL produced by this gene product is 3OC6HSL. It is used in quorum sensing systems: one organism expresses LuxI, whose AHL's diffuse freely into the surrounding environment. When an AHL enters a strain expressing LuxR, they bind, and LuxR-AHL activates pLux (there is also a LuxR-repressed version of pLux). The expression of a gene can thus be tied to the surrounding concentration of other (LuxI-expressing) organisms.
