LuxR
LuxR is a regulatory protein which activates pLux (there is also a version inhibited LuxR). It is used in quorum sensing systems: one organism expresses LuxI, which synthesizes AHL molecules. These diffuse freely into the surrounding environment. When an AHL enters a strain expressing LuxR, they bind, and LuxR-AHL activates pLux. The expression of a gene can thus be tied to the surrounding concentration of other (LuxI-expressing) organisms.
