∆9, ∆12, ∆15 desaturases with LacI promoter
This protein generator is composed of the delta 9, delta 12 and delta 15 desaturase genes with an RBS upstream of each coding sequence and LacI regulated promoter. Desaturases introduce cis-carbon double bonds to the carbon chain of fatty acids. ∆9 desaturase introduces a double bond to stearic acid between carbon 9 and carbon 10 to produce oleic acid. ∆12 desaturase introduces a double bond between carbon 12 and carbon 13 of oleic acid so to produce linoleic acid. In the end, ∆15 desaturase converts linoleic acid into alpha-linolenic acid by adding a double bond between carbon 15 and carbon 16 (Figure 1).
Figure 1. The conversion of stearic acid into alpha-linolenic acid by 3 desaturases.
