S. pneumoniae ComE CDS

Usage and Biology

ComE is part of a two-component regulatory system (TCS), the master switch that controls competence development in exponentially-growing Streptococcus pneumoniae cultures. ComE is the response regulator to histidine kinase ComD. Upon binding and detection of the quorum-sensing peptide CSP, transmembrane receptor ComD autophosphorylates using ATP. Subsequently, cytosolic protein ComE is transphosphorylated by ComD. ComE~P activates the comCDE and comAB operons, which results in a cascade of reactions that activates the production of numerous bacteriocins and genetic competence.
