This is a Class I chitinase cloned from an interior spruce (Picea glauca x engelmannii). The chitinase breaks down chitin, a substance found in the exoskeleton of arthropods (spiders, insects, etc.) and in the cell walls of fungi. The part can be used to produce the chitinase protein and break down chitin. It might be useful in creating a biobrick that would be used to affect the chitin in arthropods or fungi.
