pilA1 signal sequence from cyanobacterium Synechocystis; secretes protein
pilA1, a pilin, is the major secreted protein of the cyanobacteria Synechocystis sp. PCC6803. Cyanobacterial pilin secretion pathways appear to be dependent on the overall positive charge of the leader signalling sequence, and not the actual amino acid sequence of the signal (Sergeyenko). When this signalling sequence is attached to the N-terminus of a polypeptide (or directly upstream of a protein-coding BioBrick part), the polypeptide should be secreted by Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 into the extracellular environment.
