Hydroxylamine oxidoreductase Hydroxylamine oxidoreductase (HAO) is the second enzyme in the conversion of ammonia to nitrite in Nitrosomonas europaea. It's substrate is hydroxyl amine (NH2OH) and it's producing nitrite (NO2-):

NH2OH + H2O + 2 cycAXox → NO2- + 2 cycAXred + 5 H+

In the brick there is also included a protein putatively involved in the nitrificationhttp://ecocyc.org/NEUR228410/NEW-IMAGE?type=LOCUS-POSITION&object=GJNO-2083&chromosome=CHROMOSOME-1 link to Biocyc.

Usage and Biology

HAO is an integral protein build up on a homotrimeric structure. It's the second step in the enzymatic conversion of ammonia to nitrite in the nitrifying bacteria genus. The protein works in close relationship with cycA, cycX and Ammonium monooxygenase (AMO) in this process. AMO is using 2 free electrons that are made from HAO and picked up by the cytochromes cycA and cycX. For every ammonium molecule 4 electrons are transfer; two of these are redirected to AMO while 2 is picked up and works as energy source for chemolithoautotrophic nitrifying bacteria like Nitrosomonas europaea.

This part is experienced to slow down growth rates of E.coli substantially.
