PacA codes for one of the two subunits of the pacase enzyme of P1, which packages phage DNA into the phage head. It recognizes a cleavage site inside of the pacA gene, where it cuts and initiates packaging. See PMID 15489417 for details of wildtype behavior. Part is referred to internally as bca1229.
