PAL (Phenylalanine Ammonia-lyase) catalyzes the conversion of phenylalanine to cinnamic acid
Phenylalanine is a common chemical placed into media as food for E. coli. Phenylalanine can be converted to cinnamic acid in E. coli with the addition of this gene encoding Phenylalanine Ammonia-lyase (as done by Faulkner, et al). The sequence displayed is the initial gene from Rhodosporidium toruloides, complete with introns and exons. For more information, see http://openwetware.org/wiki/IGEM:MIT/2006/Notebook/2006-6-6.
