branched-chain amino acid transaminase (BAT2); converts leucine to alpha-ketoisocaproate

BBa_J45008 encodes a branched-chain amino acid transaminase derived from the BAT2 gene from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. BAT2 catalyzes the first step in isoamyl alcohol biosynthesis: conversion of leucine to α-ketoisocaproate via enzymatic reaction 2.6.1.42.

Usage and Biology

α-ketoisocaproate can be converted to 3-methylbutanal and then isoamyl alcohol which is a precursor to isoamyl acetate (banana odor).
