Lycopene (red pigment) producing operon without PstI sites
Lycopene is synthesised by three proteins encoded by the three genes CrtE, CrtB and CrtI.
The three enzymes involved act sequentially on farnesyl diphosphate, to produce lycopene.
Lycopene is a red pigment and acts as a powerful antioxidant in the body.
