COMT coding sequence
Encodes caffeic acid-O-methyl transferase (methylates -OH on C4 of the aromatic ring, converting caffeic acid to ferulic acid) from Medicago sativa (alfalfa). This gene was synthesised by Geneart.
Usage and Biology
It has been found that strong downregulation of COMT in transgenic alfalfa plants decrease the lignin amount and a reduction in the number of units of guaiacyl (G) lignin with a total loss of syringyl (S) units in monomeric and dimeric lignin degradation products.
