E. coli Ribosome Binding Site (RBS)
Usage and Biology
The Ribosome Binding Site (RBS) is a nucleotide sequence that is located upstream of the start codon. It encodes a portion of mRNA to which the ribosome binds. From this point, the ribosome can then initiate translation of the coding sequence, starting from the start codon, enabling protein production. Translation initiation in prokaryotes mostly requires both the RBS and the start codon. A typical RBS is located around 6 nucleotides upstream (towards the 5') of the start codon.
