The Registry defines a "Protein Generator" as a composite-type part based on the combination of a Protein Coding region with one or more other parts. Protein Generators are devices that enable expression of the mRNA encoded by the CDS. Typically a Protein Generator contains a Promoter, a Ribosome Binding Site(RBS), the Protein Coding region and one or more Transcription Terminators.

Cells containing the entire composite part should be able to produce proteins in response to the appropriate stimulus.

Ribosome Binding Site

Most of the protein generators incorporate Ribosome Binding Sites. This allows them to take in PoPS as input and produce their encoded protein as output.
