gusA reporter gene
The gusA reporter gene encodes beta-glucuronidase (GUS), an enzyme from Escherichia coli.
Originally, the GUS reporter was designed to be used in plant biology to measure the activity of a promoter. The reporter was later adopted for cell screening and promoter measurement in bacteria. There are three often used methods: histochemical assay, fluorimetrical assay and spectrophotometric assay. The GUS substrates for these assays varies (5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl glucuronide for histochemical assay, 4-methylumbelliferyl-beta-D-glucuronide for fluorimetrical assay, p-nitrophenyl β-D-glucuronide for spectrophotometric assay).
